Cuban dissident Martha Beatriz Roque is near death from a hunger strike,
South Florida Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart told the House in an
emotional speech on Monday night.

"Dozens of other brave dissidents are also on hunger strikes in the home
of one of Cuba's other extremely respected pro-democracy leaders,
Vladimiro Roca," Diaz-Balart said.

The Republican from Miami accused the news media of ignoring this and
other examples of suffering in Cuba.

"Jewish friends have told me they understand what I am talking about
when I refer to the concept of the non-person," he said.

"Cubans, unlike the Jews, have not yet recovered their state. They will.
But they haven't yet," he said. "I ask the press, the media, to please
cease treating Cuba's pro-democracy activists as though they did not
exist. Stop treating Martha Beatriz Roque as a non-person."

Cuba's economic deprivations, especially since the demise of the Soviet
Union, have been widely reported. The plight of dissidents and political
prisoners has not been so widely discussed, partly because it is
difficult to confirm what is happening in Cuba and perhaps because it
has become an old story after 50 years.

Some observers blame much of the suffering on the U.S. embargo that is
designed to choke the Cuban government and force political reforms. The
embargo has hurt the Cuban people most of all, critics in this country say.

In any case, Diaz-Balart is doing what he can to keep the story alive.
